Helping Young Adults Identify and Develop Their Potential Placing Themselves on a Career Pathway That Utilizes Their Talent to Take Them to the Location in Their Career and Life Where They Want to Be and Should Be
Our primary goal is to train those who would like to operate as a Career Pathway Mentor and implement our Route 5 Career Pathway Plan. The Plan helps a Career Pathway Mentor work with a mentee to help him or her identify and complete tasks each year to meet Five “P” Career Growth Goals.
Position self on the right career pathway (identify potential and prospective work sector, industry, functional area and positions)
Prepare self for targeted career field and positions
Place self in targeted career field and positions
Perform at a high level completing tasks to advance
Personal satisfaction with present situation and performance
By meeting the five career growth goals each year, the mentee will have the opportunity to develop and utilize his/her potential on their chosen career pathway which can advance them to where they want to be in a career and life.
All of us need to reach our potential but we most likely will not become what we ought to be and should be without a plan. We grow and advance by acquiring knowledge, degrees, and experience that prepare us for a targeted career field and future positions. A Career Pathway Mentor can help a mentee learn about himself or herself and the world of work and target future positions he/she never thought they could reach.
Young Adult Five Step Career Mentoring Process
(Step One)- Obtain a PDF copy of My Career Mentor and Me and review the four sections, appendix and two contracts at the end of the book. One contract is for the young adult to sign with the Career Mentor and the other is to sign with parents if in college. Also review Podcast #3.
In (Section One -page 1), we define mentoring and describe how a Triangle Mentoring Team (Family Support Mentor, Career Pathway Mentor, and Specialist Mentors) can help young adults chart their career pathway, obtain new positions, be the best in their field and have a successful and enjoyable career journey.
The question is who plays the Career Pathway Mentoring role and the Specialist Mentor roles?
In (Section Two - page 5) Career Mentors will review and learn the three stages of the One-On-One Career Planning and Management Process.
In Stage One (page 7)-We discuss the importance of building a trusting, performance facilitating and helping relationship.
In Stage Two-(page 9) -We review the Route 5 Career Pathway Plan and the importance of identifying Tasks to Meet Five "P" Career Growth Goals that helps a person place themselves on the right career pathway and advance to where they should and ought to be in a career and life.
In Stage Three - (page 9) -We discuss the importance of completing tasks to meet Five ‘P” Career Growth Goals of the Route 5 Career Pathway Plan using the Task Expert Process.
We will also discuss the importance of:
sharpening one’s helping communication (attending, listening and responding skills)
performance facilitation skills (identifying and encouraging mentee to complete tasks to meet Five “P” Career Growth Goals each year)
the 4 M System (monitoring, measuring, modifying and meeting) and using constructive confrontation and positive reinforcement) to move young adults forward.
We also want Career Pathway Mentor to be knowledgeable about the world of work; sectors, industries, functional areas and various occupations.
In (Section Four -page 236) Career Mentors and mentees learn about The Career Growth Score Board which identifies the tasks completed to meet the Five “P” Career Growth Goals. After discussing the completion of tasks, each year, the Career Mentor asks the young professional what their future work sector, industry, functional area and positions might be at this time.
At the end of the book, we have sample resumes, marketing letters and a working contract that should be agreed upon by the Career Mentor and mentee and a Partnership Expectation PAC that should be agreed upon between parents and the son/daughter if attending college.
(Step Two)- Execute Three Stages of One-On-One CPM Process in Section Three of the book, My Career Mentor and Me with mentee.
In Stage One (page 12), the Career Mentor and mentee need to get to know one another and develop a working, trusting and caring relationship. We identified some topics the Career Mentor and mentee could share with each other. The Career Mentor should be motivated to help the mentee be successful and mentee should be excited about having a Career Mentor. in essence, establishing a working relationship is vital.
In Stage Two (pages 13-to-17), the mentee will review 40 tasks under the Five “P” Career Growth Goals and check off the ones he/she will complete to meet each of the Five “P” Career Growth Goals.

5 tasks - Placing Self in Targeted Career Field and Positions
5 tasks - Performing at High Level in H. S., College & Work to Advance
5 tasks -Personal Satisfaction in High School, College & Work
The mentee and Career Mentor can add tasks not listed that they think are important to complete to meet certain goals. You can review the other books mentioned earlier in the book section on this website and come up with additional tasks. The plan should be presented to the Family Support Mentors for their input.
In Stage Three (pages 18 to 36), the Career Mentor and mentee will use the Task Expert Process to identify where the mentee might need more information or coaching to complete each task. Once this process is completed, the mentee should proceed to complete tasks on his or her own or with specialty mentors. This procedure helps the mentee grow and it calls for honesty about one’s capability to complete a task alone.

Level One- Unconsciously incompetent- need to identify tasks to complete to
meet Five “P” Career Growth Goals
Level Two- Consciously incompetent- willing but not able to complete all tasks
listed-need some coaching or information to complete task
Level Three- Consciously Competent- willing and somewhat able-can complete
task but must think about what you are doing
Level Four- Unconsciously Competent- able and willing-can complete task
without thinking about it- considered an expert now
Mentee proceeds to complete tasks alone, with Career Pathway Mentor or with Specialty Mentors.
(Step Three-page 236)- Evaluating Performance- Career Mentor and mentee should review the Career Growth Goal Score Board in the book My Career Mentor and Me and learn if all checked off tasks on pages 13 to 17 were completed.
The Four M’s (monitor, measure, modify and meet) should be operating all year in the One-On-One CPM process but at the end of the year or a designated point in time, the mentee needs to be evaluated in regard to completing the checked off tasks on pages 13 to 17 of My Career Mentor and Me book.
Completing the tasks to meet the Five “P” Career Growth Goals each year should help the mentee have a better picture of what work sector, industry, functional area and positions should be targeted.
Step Four- (Go to Tab -Books and Assessments and Tab-Podcasts at this website). Review all books, assessments and podcasts and identify and review the ones that will help your mentee plan (set more tasks), manage and advance their career. Many of the assessments are in the book My Career Mentor and Me.
In addition to using My Career Mentor and Me, the following are books the Career Mentor and mentee should review and identify tasks that can be added to meeting the Five Career Growth Goals each year.
The Five Goal College Plan identifies tasks that college students should complete each year in college to graduate with a good job.
Excelling as a Team Leader discusses tasks each person on a team unit should complete to be the best at what they do.
Step Five- (Go to Tab- Sponsors at this website). Learn about and introduce the Sponsors to your mentee so he or she can learn about different companies and industries to plan career. We will be adding sponsors on an ongoing basis and it is our desire to have representatives from a variety of industries.
